A doctor named a little-known “side effect” of the habit of smoking cigarettes. The expert stated that addiction to tobacco can lead to a fat belly and an increase in visceral fat mass.
“Visceral fat is stored in the abdominal cavity around internal organs. This type of obesity is the most dangerous, it puts a person at the highest risk of developing metabolic diseases, ”the doctor warned.
He explained that the mechanisms of insulin production work worse in the body of smokers, and therefore blood sugar levels are less controlled. This feature contributes to the development of obesity, especially on the abdomen.
With regard to weight gain after a person quits smoking, this phenomenon is really well known, the doctor agrees. According to him, in this case, it is not quitting tobacco that leads to weight gain, but people’s attempts to cope with the stress arising from the disappearance of habit and associated rituals and actions.
