American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Inc. recalls approximately 135 thousand Model S sedans produced in 2012-2018. and Model X crossovers 2016-2018. production due to perceived touchscreen issues.
In January, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked the company to recall 158,000 vehicles. A malfunction in the memory chips led to the failure of the displays, as well as the heating system, turn signals, and driver assistance systems.
The difference in numbers is due to the fact that some of the NHTSA vehicles have already had their eMMC drives replaced or new touchscreens installed.
The agency says that problems with screens can appear after 5-6 years of using the car. Tesla tried to fix it with over-the-air updates but to no avail.
By last summer, when NHTSA received relevant data from Tesla, about 12.6 thousand electric cars already had such problems. In a letter to the regulator, Tesla disagreed with his allegations, but the company said it would recall the cars to conduct an audit.
The EV maker noted that “economically, if not technologically, it cannot be expected that such components could or should work throughout the life of the vehicle.”
Replacement of components will be done free of charge, but gradually due to insufficient inventory.
Tesla sold about 500,000 cars in 2020. Approximately 40% of shipments are in the USA.
