The new US Ambassador to Belarus Julie Fischer met with former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
“At today’s meeting with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Ambassador Fischer confirmed that the United States will continue to support the people of Belarus and those people around the world who face horrific brutality in the exercise of their fundamental freedoms,” the embassy said in a statement on its official Twitter page.
On January 27, Tikhanovskaya expressed hope that the fourth package of EU sanctions against Minsk would be adopted in the near future. She also spoke of regret over what she said was the world’s modest response to the political crisis in Belarus.
In addition, she called on Western countries to increase sanctions and pressure on Minsk, to investigate “crimes against humanity”, as well as to recognize riot police and GUBOPiK as terrorist organizations.

On January 19, Tikhanovsky called on OSCE members to create a platform to discuss the crisis in the republic. She also appealed to international organizations to ensure her safe return to Belarus.
