In Ukraine, they are going to toughen punishments for drunk driving. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is concerned that the number of accidents with drunk drivers has increased recently and supports the tightening of punishment.
Over the past two years, there have been many high-profile accidents in Ukraine in which people have suffered. However, the perpetrators, although they were convicted of their crimes, can still avoid harsh punishment and leave after serving only half of the term. After several serious accidents, CAFs appeared on the roads, and the police again began to use TruCam complexes, changes were made to laws, and the speed in settlements was reduced to 50 km / h.
But these measures did not help much either. Serious fatal accidents in 2020 took the lives of many Ukrainians – adults, children, and entire families die.
In the coming days, a new bill will be introduced to the Verkhovna Rada, which will take into account all the edits and innovations regarding the tightening of traffic rules. Two bills # 2697 and # 2695 were adopted by the deputies in the first reading back in 2020.
In the first, it is proposed to increase fines for pedestrians by three times, in the second – to toughen the penalties for drivers who were caught drunk while driving.
The maximum fine is proposed to be increased to UAH 51,000. Also, a rule will be introduced on the possibility of arresting a malicious violator of traffic rules – if he is caught drunk while driving twice within one year.
Police will begin special raids from late evening to early morning and will selectively stop drivers to check for alcohol in their blood. Such raids will pay special attention to holidays and the next day after the weekend.
In addition, the court will no longer be able to release from liability the offender who committed the offense for the first time and repented. The provision on a suspended sentence and the possibility of taking a person on bail will be canceled.
