According to a new study by a group of scientists from the United States and the United Kingdom, fossil fuel pollution is the cause of more than 8 million premature deaths each year. This is twice the estimated death rate from small-scale pollution and three times the total number of deaths from HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in 2018.
Although air quality has improved in many countries, especially in the richer ones, the results show that even at lower concentrations, fossil fuel pollution is not safer than previously thought.
In the United States, for example, researchers have found that 350,000 premature deaths per year are due to particulate matter pollution from fossil fuel combustion, compared with preliminary estimates of about 100,000 to 150,000. This means that even in countries that demonstrate progress in combating pollution, much work remains to be done, especially in poor and historically disadvantaged areas where pollution is even more concentrated.
In the new study, experts used improved methods, including establishing a closer relationship between air pollution levels and their effects in different regions based on a comprehensive review of research from around the world. The improved research model made it possible to obtain more accurate data.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, more than 400 companies in the global economy with the highest greenhouse gas emissions – from freight to steel production – agreed to work together on plans for decarbonization (reduction of CO2 emissions) by 2050.
