Scientists link air pollution and vision problems!
The negative consequences of climate change processes are obvious for everyone – despite this, while humanity is not able to make enough efforts to change something. Long-term research has shown that air pollution increases the risk of progressive and irreversible vision loss.
Researchers at the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London have hypothesized that air pollution may increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration, a disease that affects the retina of the eye and causes central vision impairment.
The experiment began in 2006 and has lasted until now, involving 115 954 people aged 40 to 69 years who did not have vision problems at the time of the start of the study.
Already in 2009 and 2012, scientists noted in 52,602 participants in the experiment changes in the integrity of the retina and / or the number of light receptors – these signs indicate the development of age-related macular degeneration.
The scientists then ranked the air pollution in the participants’ areas. Researchers have found that air pollution is directly related to maintaining the integrity of the retina. Thus, participants living in areas with the most polluted air had a risk of developing age-related macular degeneration by at least 8% higher.
In the event that the content of solid impurities with a large particle diameter is exceeded in the air, the risk of developing the disease increases by 12%. According to the results of the study, 1286 participants in the experiment were diagnosed with macular degeneration.
