In Blagoveshchensk, Gaivoronsky, Golovanovsky, and Novoarkhangelsky districts of the Kirovograd region, winter crops may die from frost. The head department of the regional department of agro-industrial development Grigory Arsiriy told about it.
At 20 degrees of frost, the height of snow should be at least 20 centimeters, so as not to freeze winter barley and wheat. The height of snow in the western regions is the lowest in the region – no more than two centimeters.
What part of the crops in the region died from frosts, will be known after taking samples from the fields – said the head of the regional department of agro-industrial development Hryhoriy Arsiriy: sprouted. It takes 5-6 days to see the percentage of plant damage.”
Peak frosts, according to Gregory Arsiri, are expected on January 21. Selection of plants will be done on January 25, February 20, and March 10.
On the demonstration field of the Institute of Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences in the village of Sozonivka, Kropyvnytskyi district. On the site, under the snow – winter barley crops.
According to the head of the crop department of the Institute of Agriculture Nazar Umrykhin, now the plants of winter crops are dormant. The height of the snow cover is 4 centimeters: “For frosts at the level of 22-24 degrees, this amount of snow is not enough to ensure that the plants do not freeze. Snow cover of loose, loose snow with a height of 10 centimeters and above guarantees the resistance to frost in the air up to 30 degrees.
The height of the snow cover on the demonstration field in Sozonivka is 4 cm.
According to the director of the Institute of Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences Igor Semenyaka, 14-16 degrees below zero can damage crops. But if the crops have accumulated enough nutrients, they can withstand frosts up to 18-20 degrees for a short period: “If we predict a decrease in temperature at the level of the tillering node to minus 14-15, then wheat may already have some negative consequences. But very serious consequences can be on winter barley and rapeseed. These are the crops that can die in 10-12 degrees below zero at the depth of the tillering node.
