Twitter is expanding the list of countries whose government accounts and state-affiliated media organizations will be marked separately.
The company first introduced such badges in August, but initially, they were applied only to profiles from the United States, Britain, Russia, China, and France. Twitter now says it will expand efforts to reach accounts in Canada, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, and Emirates.
The list will expand based on the countries that are part of the G7, as well as “countries to which Twitter has attributed transactions with information related to the state.” The new shortcuts, which indicate when the account is managed by a government official or organization, will take effect next week. The company will also label accounts owned by state-run and state-supported media.
