Ukrainian diplomats believe that the strategy of the new US administration will be based on an integrated approach to Russia and Ukraine at the same time. And on the issue of cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, military and economic cooperation will become the main ones.
The US military budget for this year has allocated $ 275 million to aid Ukraine – 25 million more than last year. Joint training and military exercises will also continue, said the current Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, Volodymyr Yelchenko.
Special attention will be paid to trade and economic cooperation and political support in the de-occupation of Ukrainian territories and promotion to NATO.
“Of course, we understand that Ukraine should not take for granted the positive attitude of the new US administration. It should be a two-way road, ”Yelchenko stressed.
Former Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin believes that the United States is interested in a common success story with Ukraine.
“There are two key things to achieve in this cadence: a shared success story in resetting the country and a shift from partnership to the alliance. This is possible with the formation of an absolutely new level of trust in Ukraine, in its institutions, which does not exist yet, ”he said.
Klimkin is confident that the United States will begin to actively engage in the situation in Donbass. However, the expansion of the Normandy format due to the accession of the United States to it should not be expected – Moscow, as a participant in the negotiations, will in every possible way oppose the strengthening of Ukraine’s positions.
In addition, Russia will traditionally try to use the destabilization in Ukraine for bargaining in negotiations with Washington.
The Department of State, not the Pentagon, the CIA, or the Department of Homeland Security, became the first federal agency visited by the new US president. Thus, he wanted to emphasize the leading role of diplomacy among other means of implementing the foreign policy course of his administration.
