Joint pain is often caused by improper tension, such as exercising or sitting for a long time. Sometimes the body becomes stiff, the joints ache, and suddenly you feel old. The good news is, in many cases, you can do a lot yourself for joint pain.
This helps to start with the common causes of joint pain, which are also known as arthralgia.
“The classic causes of joint pain are overload and obesity,” says physician Torsten Pfitzer (Germany).
Pay attention to body weight and diet
If you cannot compensate for this, improper loading can even damage the cartilage in the joint structures over time, leading to osteoarthritis.
“It can happen at a relatively young age,” says Pfitzer. Proper exercise and body weight play an important role in preventing joint pain and wear and tear.
Diet also affects joints.
“It has been debated for years whether, for example, sugar, cow’s milk, and white flour have an inflammatory effect,” says Pfitzer.
For example, they are suspected of developing rheumatic diseases.
Rheumatic diseases cause joint pain
Rheumatism is an autoimmune disease. The body attacks its own tissues. This results in very different symptoms, such as joint pain at rest and at night, joint swelling, and often general malaise with exhaustion, fever, and night sweats.
See a doctor if symptoms persist
If you suspect that your joint pain may be caused by rheumatic disease, you should definitely see your doctor. Also, check if joints are red and swollen or symptoms persist. For acute joint inflammation, when the joint is red and swollen, it usually helps to relax and apply cold compresses. Light, calm movements may also be helpful.
Train your body in a balanced way
Joints that tend to react early to inappropriate stress are the ankle, knee, hip, and shoulder, and in some cases, elbows. In any case, it is important to exercise all parts of the body in a balanced way to avoid inappropriate stress. This also includes stretching exercises and observing the fascia.
“You should also think about the temporomandibular joints,” says Pfitzer. “They are often neglected and have a great effect on the whole body.”
