Sometimes chest pain is just harmless muscle tension, but it can also be caused by life-threatening diseases or conditions.
The concept of chest pain is very broad, but in any case, we are not talking about an independent disease – only a symptom. The symptom of what? Well, many diseases of the heart, lungs, esophagus, bones, or muscles are expressed, among other things, by chest pain. It can also be felt as such if the abdominal organs hurt (a stomach ulcer, for example, gives a feeling of chest pain). Depending on the cause, chest pain manifests itself in different ways. The pain may be stabbing, light, strong, pressing, burning, or only occasionally felt when coughing or breathing.
Experts from the Fit for Fun health portal (Germany) spoke about in which cases chest pain can be felt.
Punctual stabbing pain indicates muscle causes but can also come from bones (spine, ribs) or joints.
An additional burning sensation behind the breastbone indicates a disease of the esophagus.
With a heart attack, you may experience sharp pain with pressure and difficulty breathing or chest pain that occurs when breathing. Severe pain is often accompanied by sweating, nausea, or vomiting.
Angina pectoris can cause pressing pain in the chest and over the heart, often caused by physical or emotional stress.
Sharp and worsening chest pain during breathing may indicate pneumonia with pleural involvement (pleuropneumonia). In the case of acute pulmonary embolism, it is felt especially strong.
If the pain starts gradually and gets worse over time, it may indicate a malignant tumor.
Chest pain with lung disease. They do not always cause chest pain because the lung tissue itself is not pain-sensitive. Pain-sensitive parts of the lungs include the pleura, windpipe, large bronchi, and large pulmonary vessels. Thus, extensive pneumonia affecting only the lung tissue can be completely painless, and relatively small pleurisy can cause severe pain.
When chest pain indicates heart disease. An inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle due to narrowing of the coronary vessels causes pain known as angina. It becomes visible behind the breastbone as burning or pressing pain and is caused or aggravated by physical stress or arousal. If a branch of the coronary arteries closes, a heart attack occurs with the death of the heart muscle tissue, which can cause severe chest pain.
Harmless causes of chest pain. Muscle tension and blockages in the spine or coastal joints sometimes cause discomfort. The pain of this origin is characterized by the fact that it depends on movement or increases with pressure.
