A 35-year-old resident of Mauritius, Kang Chan Kin, worried about the enormous amount of garbage in his country, decided to operate it, and now makes musical instruments from waste.
“I think litter is a big problem in Mauritius, so people like me, citizens of Mauritius, should not be afraid to get their hands dirty sometimes to get rid of the garbage and improve our island,” Kanu said.
Mauritius is a very small island (only 45 kilometers wide and 65 kilometers long), but it is a densely populated country (more than 1.2 million people), where every resident produces, according to the World Bank, about two kilograms of solid waste per day. This is nearly twice that of most city dwellers.
These indications did not inspire Kano with optimism, but they did push him to take decisive action. The guy makes his musical instruments from a lot of discarded things, using recycling. He makes drums, banjo, xylophones, and more. He often comes to school to tell children how important recycling garbage is and to show them that it can be turned into a lot of interesting things.
Kano works on the island using his trash kit as DJ and producer of bands. He wants to prove that ordinary people and their daily business are of great importance to the future of the island and the entire planet.
