In the Dnieper, on February 23, the display of unusual paintings began. There is a well-known saying that artists do not paint their own paintings, but “write”. The exhibition of the artist and calligrapher from Dnipro Oleh Syrota consists of such paintings. It is called “Synergy of Letters” and is located in the art cafe “Floyd”.
Kiev. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – March 01, 2021 – Reports
Oleg Syrota is a graphic designer, artist, and calligrapher who took part in the Dnipro contemporary art festival GogolFest in 2019 and the international exhibition “REDIS.Ka” in 2021. Oleg’s works consist of letters, film and book quotes, and individual statements. This kind of fine art, such as the creation of paintings from letters, was called “calligraphy”.
Calligraphy is not just the art of depicting the letters that will form into pictures. It is also called “the art of beautiful writing.” In Europe, calligraphy began to appear with the beginning of Christianity, during which the copying of texts of the Bible and other religious treatises increased. At that time, the Latin type of writing also developed, which was later called “Gothic” or “Gothic”. Biblical texts were widely popular among the population, especially the beautiful and colorful capital letters at the beginning of each passage.
The art of depicting the letters that will form into pictures is not as simple as it seems. The letters drawn by the artist must express a certain emotionality, and at the same time, make a harmonious, pleasing to the eye composition.
Oleg became interested in calligraphy as a child. Together with friends, he created street art. When his friends grew up, the artist thought about the possibility of making his drawings permanent, which could be stored somewhere and used from time to time. Then Oleg Sirota moved from street drawings to work with the text: creating beautiful and aesthetic fonts and logos.
“For me, calligraphy is the closest way to self-expression.” – says the master. – Calligraphy can be different: both smooth and sharp and expressive. That’s why I work not in one style, but in several, which helps to convey almost any mood. She doesn’t have time to get bored with me.”
Synergy (Greek – together) is a total effect, which consists in the fact that when two or more factors interact, their action significantly outweighs the effect of each individual component in the form of their simple sum. Oleg’s exhibition got this name, not by chance. “The idea was to combine works made in different styles in one exhibition. So I wanted to show that you don’t have to be afraid to experiment. You will be able to see that together these works also look beautiful. ” – the artist speaks about the plan.
The exhibition presents a number of portraits of famous figures: the famous poet Taras Shevchenko, poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, American rapper XXXTentacion, and singer Billie Eilish. There is also a portrait of “My dear” in the style of modern Gothic. One of the interesting works is the text made on a skateboard called “Dreamer”. These are the lines from the song “vs94ski – Spider”: “Bad is the dreamer whose dream came true. And the one who exchanged pieces of clouds for a handful of earth.”
The event was also attended by works done in blue. The first is the painting “Think of the Sea”. “The work is about peace and harmony. The blue palette makes you slow down, look back, stop endlessly chasing something, but just relax and follow the flow. – Oleg Syrota comments. – And this is “Infinity of space”. – he adds about the second job. – It was a reflection on the theme of outer space and the endless cycle of events. It contains author’s notes inspired by the film “Arrival”.
During the opening of the exhibition, guests had the opportunity to co-author Oleg in the art of calligraphy for a while and “write” a completely new picture. Having created the painting, the visitors of the exhibition also did a good and noble deed, as the funds from the sale of this work were received by the Owl Charitable Foundation. 15% of the calligrapher’s work also served charity.
The works of the artist and calligrapher impress with their dynamism and brightness. Portraits of celebrities are very similar to the originals. The volume of the forms adds a feeling of immersion in the picture and being in virtual reality, where you can read personally and get new emotions. Oleg Syrota is a brave and extremely talented man who is not afraid to challenge not only contemporary art but also himself. This can be seen in each of his works.
The exhibition is located in the cafe “Floyd”, which is located at Sicheslavskaya Embankment, 37. Admission to the exhibition is free. The event will last until March 15, 2021, according to the schedule of the café.
