When tomatoes are attacked by a caterpillar, the plants secrete a special enzyme. This is both a tomato’s plea for help and a warning to neighboring plants,
University scientists have conducted several experiments with tomatoes. Initially, “launched” in makeshift greenhouses for plants of other pests. After the insects damaged the tomato leaves, the plants released a special chemical compound. This is a strong warning signal for other plants.
Thus, during a caterpillar attack, the tomato emits an odor that attracts wasps to it. They, in turn, feed on the caterpillar and thus have lunch and free the tomatoes from the attackers.
However, in order not to be eaten, some insects “spray” tomatoes with a special enzyme. The pores in the leaves of the plant do not open, the substances are not released and the signal for help does not reach the recipient.
