In order to teach children to recognize the first signs of a stroke and seek emergency medical care, the educational program “Superheroes FAST” is launched in Ukrainian schools.
Kiev. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – March 06, 2021 – Education
The concept of the New Ukrainian School aims to teach children vital skills and competencies in a natural way: through play, cooperation, communication. The proposed program is a good example of a competency-based approach to learning and provides children with important knowledge about the basics of health and how to seek emergency medical care. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine supports the educational program “FAST Superheroes”.
Every school in Ukraine can join the program. All you need to do is register on the site.
After registration, the teacher gets free access to all teaching and learning materials for thematic lessons. The program includes 5 interactive classes, after which children receive the title of FAST Superhero and the appropriate certificate.
The global goal of the program is to teach 1 million children worldwide to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. To confirm the successful completion of the program, the organizers offer all FAST Superheroes to take pictures in masks and upload photos to set the Guinness World Record – the largest photo album on the Internet Superheroes. You can join the record by vocation. The mask can be printed directly on the site or made of colored paper.
The FAST Superheroes program is built around three animated retired superheroes and their grandson. They use the ambulance call number as a signal to help easily remember the symptoms of a stroke:
1- on one side of the face there is a sudden asymmetry (the face is skewed)
0- zero force in the hand
3- two lips and one tongue suddenly can not pronounce words
One in four people can experience a stroke in a lifetime. This is the second most common cause of death, the third leading cause of disability, and one of the main reasons why children lose their loved ones. Stroke is effectively treated if help is provided as quickly and correctly as possible, so every minute counts.
Studies show that people often do not recognize the key signs of a stroke and do not seek medical attention immediately. A study published in the journal BMC Emergency Medicine found that only 23% of stroke patients were aware that they had a stroke. And only 11% of them immediately sought an ambulance.
The FAST Superheroes project aims to spread knowledge about the signs of stroke through children’s awareness. You can learn more about the program and join superhero families on the site.
The FAST Superheroes educational program is an international campaign conducted in more than 20 countries around the world. This is an interactive educational program for children 5-9 years old, which with the help of superhero characters, as well as interesting games, contests, improvements, and cartoons teaches children to recognize the first signs of a stroke and call an ambulance.
The program was developed by the Faculty of Education and Social Policy of the University of Macedonia (Greece) with the support of the Angels Initiative and approved by the World Stroke Organization. In Ukraine, the program is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and in partnership with GS “Osvitoria”.
About the Angels Initiative:
The Angels Initiative is a health care initiative that helps hospitals around the world be as prepared as possible for stroke treatment so that people with the disease receive prompt and quality care. To this end, Angels are helping to create new hospitals ready to accept stroke patients, as well as improving the quality of care for such patients in existing healthcare facilities. The big goal of the initiative is to provide all stroke patients with the same level of care, regardless of which hospital they end up in.
The FAST Superheroes project is supported by the World Stroke Organization, a non-profit medical association that raises awareness about stroke prevention and treatment.
