It is noted that some activists consider the step a further attack on freedom of expression in the country.
The government has not yet responded to requests for comment, but the telecommunications regulator told WAF that the application was blocked due to “lack of proper permission.”
“Similar communication applications must be authorized by the authorities,” the agency said.
In February, China became the first country to block the Clubhouse.
The application was created in early 2020. In early 2021, it gained popularity after a discussion held on this platform by Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev.
The clubhouse is popular in Arab countries, where the media is directly controlled by the authorities, and commentators risk being imprisoned for critical statements.
The application has been criticized for reporting cruelty, anti-Semitism, and misinformation about COVID-19 on the platform.
The authors of the Clubhouse said they are investing in tools to detect and prevent abuse, as well as features for users who can set rules for their rooms to moderate conversations.
