Chinese startup Shenzhen SpinQ Technology has developed a full-fledged quantum computer that can be used in schools and universities to teach how quantum computers work.
The device, the size, and weight of a small system unit, costs about 5 thousand dollars, which contrasts sharply with the multi-million dollar prices for existing models such as the Canadian D-Wave 2000Q.
The low cost of a quantum computer is due to its low computing power. SpinQ operates with only two qubits (the same D-Wave operates with 2000 qubits), so it is unsuitable for breaking codes or “heavy” calculations. But for study – just right.
This isn’t the company’s first quantum model. Last year, it also unveiled a $ 50k, 55kg, two-qubit desktop device.
Educational institutions were reluctant to purchase SpinQ Gemini quantum systems. But when the computer became lighter and cheaper, they became interested.
The start of deliveries of new items is expected in the fourth quarter of 2021.
At the same time, work is already underway on systems capable of processing 3 or even 4 qubits. The startup has no plans to enter the super-powerful computing device market like Google, IBM, or Microsoft. In the market of quantum computers, the company intends to develop in its niche – educational.
According to Shenzhen SpinQ Technology, low-cost portable quantum computers will facilitate the hands-on learning experience of quantum computing at all levels.
