Taking a popular drug incorrectly has side effects, including serious and dangerous, such as liver damage, which can be fatal.
Paracetamol is a common pain reliever that is also used to lower fever. Specialists of the British health service NHS issued a warning that improper use of the drug (primarily its overdose) can cause side effects, including dangerous ones. Experts note that taking too much paracetamol is not that difficult, as paracetamol is found in many medicines for the treatment of colds and flu.
One of the side effects of paracetamol is an allergic reaction.
“An allergic reaction to taking paracetamol can cause a rash and swelling,” doctors warn.
Other side effects cited by experts include:
low blood pressure and heart palpitations – for example, this can happen when paracetamol is injected into a vein in your arm in a hospital;
blood disorders such as thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) and leukopenia (low white blood cell count);
negative gastrointestinal symptoms.
“Some people feel nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain after taking too much paracetamol,” the experts say.
Careful liver! The dangerous effect of improper, excessive intake of paracetamol is hepatoxicity, which means liver damage. Moreover, deterioration can manifest itself only sometime after the use of the medicine.
“Paracetamol poisoning is often initially asymptomatic or presents with only mild gastrointestinal symptoms. However, it can cause varying degrees of liver damage for two to four days after ingestion, ”the NHS warns.
Experts emphasize: if too large a dose of this medicine has been taken, you need to seek medical help as soon as possible, and this should be done, despite the state of health, since deterioration can occur suddenly after a while.
How much to take? The usual dose of paracetamol (for adults) is one or two 500 mg tablets at a time. It can be taken with or without food, but there should be at least 4 hours between meals. The maximum number of appointments is four per day.
While taking paracetamol, you need to consider other medications that may contain it.
Who shouldn’t take it? For people with high blood pressure, doctors advise not to take paracetamol, which dissolves in water – this type contains a lot of salt.
People with liver problems should use it only after consulting a doctor – you may have to refuse to take it altogether.
