This came in a press release published on the UNICEF website, which stated, “The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will provide development services to families with children in communities in eastern Ukraine, funded by a grant of 10 million euros provided by the German government through KfW.”
It is worth noting that, during the period 2019-2020, UNICEF launched the KFW-funded SPILNO program “Social Services for Families in Communities” project in 12 pilot communities in eastern Ukraine, where the new contribution will allow the expansion to include new program areas and communities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The project aims to establish best practices for the delivery of social services in recently incorporated communities, and to support those new administrative structures to deal effectively with the responsibility transferred to them as part of the decentralization process.
The project will develop social services in communities, enhance the value of inclusive education, secure access to safe and clean water, civic participation for youth, and improve access to education facilities. Together, these will contribute to social cohesion and the well-being of families in conflict-affected communities.
More than 500,000 people will benefit from the project in eastern Ukraine.
The project mainly targets families with children, including poor families, such as families raising children with disabilities, internally displaced families and others.
“Coronavirus has exacerbated the crisis in regions that have suffered from armed conflict for six years,” said Lotta Silwander, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine. Over the past year, the demand for social services in communities in eastern Ukraine has grown dramatically.
