Antibiotics do not cure viruses, as we all know. Unfortunately, these drugs are still used where they are completely ineffective, as confirmed by a study published in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology of the Society of Epidemiology of Health of America. It shows that improper use of antibiotics can lead to an increase in their consumption.
Improper prescriptions for antibiotics for uncomplicated urinary tract infections have been found to be very common and have serious consequences for the lives of patients. The study examined data on insurance disturbances in more than 670,000 women aged 18 to 44 years with uncomplicated urinary tract infections. The researchers identified prescriptions for antibiotics and assessed doctors’ compliance with clinical guidelines.
It turned out that the wrong appointment of antibiotics is the most common phenomenon. Thus, 47% of prescriptions for antibiotics did not meet the recommendations of clinical institutions. As for the duration of these drugs, it was even worse – 76% of antibiotic courses had the wrong duration. Almost all of them lasted longer than recommended.
