Luis Abinader, the President of the Dominican Republic, has announced the construction of a wall on the border with Haiti to combat illegal migration and cross-border crime.

The construction of the wall will begin later this year.
“Within two years, we want to put an end to serious problems with illegal immigration , drug trafficking and the movement of stolen vehicles,” Abinader said.
The wall will include a double fence with motion sensors, infrared systems and face recognition cameras.
The Dominican Republic has already built several sections of fencing along the border with Haiti.
It is estimated that there are about 500,000 migrants from Haiti living in the country, many of whom are in the country illegally.
