The ceremony took place at the official residence of Tanzanian presidents in the country’s largest city, Dar es Salaam. According to the publication, Suluhiya became the first woman to head the state in this African country.
According to Tanzania’s constitution, in the event of the president’s death, the vice president takes office and remains in office until the end of his or her term. The current mandate of 61-year-old Suluhu ends at the end of 2025. Magufuli died last Wednesday night due to heart problems at Mzen Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
The publication notes that next Saturday a meeting of the leadership of the country’s ruling Revolutionary Party (CCM) will be held, at which a new vice president will be elected.
Hassan Suluhu herself was born on the island of Zanzibar and is a Muslim. She began her political career in 2000 when she was elected to parliament. Then Suluhu held a number of ministerial posts. In 2015, John Magufuli elected her as vice president in the then-presidential election. She ran again in October 2020 in tandem with Magufuli, who won a landslide victory.
