The copper coin from the reign of Khan of the Golden Horde Abdullah was found by researchers during archeological excavations on Primorsky Boulevard of Odessa, at the site of a possible location of the Khadzhibey Fortress, in December 2020.
Kiev. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – March 22, 2021 – Reports
This was announced on Facebook by Doctor of Historical Sciences Andriy Krasnozhon, who took part in the excavations.
He published a photo of the artifact and wrote: “Abdullah’s pool of 367-1370 from excavations on Primorsky Boulevard in Odessa, after restoration. The first and so far the only one.”
According to the historian, the coin was found together with ceramics of the first quarter of the middle of the 14th century.
The researcher clarified that earlier the shards of two vessels of the 1360s were found during excavations near the Vorontsov Palace, but then the find seemed accidental.
“Today, such ceramics in Odessa seem to be becoming the norm. What this means is not yet clear. We need to look for it,” said Professor Krasnozhon.
Using geo-exploration data, the researchers will continue excavations on Primorsky Boulevard “in a checkerboard pattern,” he added.
Abdullah’s Pool is a copper coin of the Golden Horde of the 1360s. Its weight is 1.51 g, diameter 18 mm. The coin depicts in a dotted rim a predatory beast turned to the right, on the tip of the tail of which is a small head with an open mouth. On the reverse of the coin is the inscription: “Khan Abdullah, may His reign continue.”
Archaeologists from the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University conducted excavations on Primorsky Boulevard together with students in the fall of 2020 to find the remains of Khadzhibey Castle. The supervisors of the works – doctors of historical sciences Andriy Krasnozhon and Svitlana Ivanova – believe that after the soldiers blew up and destroyed the castle walls, fragments of the foundation could have survived.
