The European Union has taken a step towards introducing new visa-free rules. At the end of last week, the EU institutions agreed on how the new system would work and how it would retrieve information from key databases. Ahead is a short period of documentation, formal approval of the decision, and from the beginning of 2022, the new system should work in practice.

So once visa-free travel is restored – and it will soon be restored – we need to be prepared to change its rules.
These innovations are not unexpected. European Truth has previously reported that the EU is preparing to launch a so-called travel authorization system – ETIAS, which will oblige Ukrainians traveling to the EU (and not only to the Schengen countries!), Once every three years to register in a special system and in most cases – to pay a fee for it.
“European Truth” explains how the new system will work, what will change in the rules of visa-free travel, and how you can save on payment. For those who prefer video – about it in our video blog.
How will it work?
After the new system works and becomes mandatory (about when this will happen – a little later in the text), a tourist from Ukraine going to the EU will be required to pass an online authorization every three years – conditionally saying, to confirm their right to use a visa.
This will be done online, without the need to contact the consulate, visa center, or any other intermediary. It is enough to fill in the questionnaire on a specially created site, which will open soon (the European Commission has reserved the address http://etias.eu/ for it, but it can still change). Interestingly, the EU officially allows authorization on behalf of others – for example, children can help older parents, or the employer can take care of employees who are sent on business trips.
