Google will contribute $ 25 million to the newly created European Foundation for Media and Anti-Fake News.
The COVID-19 pandemic and last year’s US election sparked a huge spike in disinformation, with some blaming social media for not being more proactive in tackling the problem, while regulators said they could take action with tough restrictions.
The European Media and Foundation, established by the Kalust Gulbenkian Foundation and the European University Institute last week, aims to involve researchers, fact-checkers, non-profit organizations, and other public interest bodies to help combat fake news.
The American company Twitter has announced a project called Birdwatch, designed to combat inaccurate information.
