History of the holiday
Saint Cyril was born in the 4th century in Jerusalem, in a family deeply immersed in church life. On the day of coming of age, he received monastic vows. Gradually, he took a more significant position in the church, but his views prevented him and because of them he was forced to leave the city. Cyril did not support the Arian doctrine.
During the famine, he took care of its population by selling his property and sharing food with others. After he began to sell church property, the money also went to live on locals. Proponents of Arian doctrine turned his actions against him and blamed all the problems of his city.
The exiled Cyril found refuge in Tarsus, but the authorities found him here and put him under arrest. Only after the change of power was he able to be released, but he could not engage in his activities with the current ruler. The change of government again affected his activities, he was expelled again. Only the next ruler was just and returned him to the city, and restored all his achievements in the church.
As a result of his life, many works were written, including 2 great teachings and 23 works.
